.abogado is a TLD in ICANN's New gTLD Program. MMX, also known as Minds + Machines, was the only applicant.[1]
Intended Use
.abogado is a new restricted top-level domain open only to accredited lawyers, law firms and legal professionals world-wide. Application for a .abogado domain requires independent third party verification.
Delegation Status
.abogado was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on the 15th October, 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[2]
Notable User
Spanish for lawyer, .abogado is a new domain name extension, also known as a top-level domain (TLD), exclusive to qualified Lawyers and law firms worldwide.
Targeted towards legal professionals to increase their online presence and rebrand their practices and the legal services industry on the Internet as a whole. .abogado offers a distinct, official, and trusted domain for the legal profession.
Application Details
"The purpose of the .abogado top-level domain is to offer licensed attorneys an exclusive opportunity to present themselves on the Internet to a Spanish-speaking audience."[3]
The TLD will be restricted to licensed attorneys with pre-registration verification:
"We are grateful to adopt the applicable recommendations of the Security Standards Working Group(“SSWG”) which developed a set of registry security standards, in conjunction with the development of ICANN’s Applicant Guidebook. Although developed for finance-related gTLD strings, many of the safeguards proposed in that context are adopted and will be operated by the .abogado Registry. More particularly, the .abogado registry will adopt and implement the following Standards set out in Appendix B to the letter sent by BITS to ICANN referenced in Question 30 in the Guidebook, namely Standards 1,2,3,4,5,8,9,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,24,and 27.
As a result of the application of these standards, there will be pre-verification of all attorney registrants, who will be required to demonstrate that they hold a valid license to practice law in their designated country or other legal jurisdiction. Electronic interfaces with the relevant legal bar associations or other trusted repositories to speed the registration process will be developed. Proxy registrations will not be permitted."[4]
Contract signed
On the 24th April 2014, MMX received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .abogado after passing the Initial Evaluation.[5]
