[edit] Mission Statement

Salsa.Net represents a unique mixture of peoples, cultures, and trades that form our community, and in doing so takes action to: provide vision and leadership to develop a regional information environment; educate the community on the values and particulars of telecommunications; encourage and enable area residents to use telecommunications; expand the means of educational and governmental access; provide a forum for the discussion of public policy related to information access; and, provide a stimulus for economic development.

[edit] History of SalsaNet

Having originally sprung from a loosely-formed consortium called MetroNet, founded by Richard Murphy of Southwest Research Institute in 1992, SALSANET's early history was one marked with great success and innovation. Murphy built a coalition of professionals from the business, government, educational, and research sectors who met to discuss how their technological solutions could be welded into a city asset.

Growing in scope to include additional initiatives such as the FreeNet project, a computer recycling program, and educational outreach, SALSANET began to make serious impact, rolling out some of the first networks and Internet sites in Texas, including "Texas Through Time", "The Daughters of the Texas Republic Library", CRECER, and AVANCE.

Providing vision and leadership throughout the 1990s, not only educating the communities of the Alamo Area and enabling residents to use the new and exciting telecommunications innovations such as the Internet, but also expanding governmental access and stimulating the information technology economy, SALSANET's successes are measured in San Antonio's competitive advantage from a strong Internet infrastructure, a highly skilled labor force, participation in the global community, and stimulating environment for new business development.

Becoming the South Central Texas Chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC) in 1999, SALSANET now has annexed the region, to include Austin. Ratifying a new agenda and mission, in addition to electing new officers Dean McCall and EJ Preston, as well as a stacked board of directors earlier this year, the member-based non-profit coalition now has its sites set on Wireless, Open-source solutions for other non-profits, and Digital Convergence to making sure the Alamo Area's residents are primed and ready for the coming digital revolution.
