Owen Smigelski was formerly the Director of Contractual Compliance at ICANN. He now works at Namecheap as Head of ICANN Compliance and Relations.[1] He was previously an Attorney with Sunrider International. Prior to this, Owen was a member of several law firms, specializing in trademarks and litigation. Owen's first position after law school was with an intellectual property law firm, where he had the opportunity to work extensively in the fields of trademarks, patents, and copyrights.[2]
Mr. Smigelski has been been a PC guru since age seven, when his mom brought home an IBM 5150; he has been a server admin since he became Gopher admin during his freshman year at SUNY Geneseo. His passions have continued to be computers and related technology.
Between his first and second year of law school, Smigelski had an internship with a French law firm in Paris. It was there he assisted an attorney in drafting a French legal text on the law and intellectual property, specifically trademark protection in domain names, and discovered that IP law was his calling.[3]
Education
Owen attended university at State University of New York College in 1997[4] and received his Law degree from the University of San Diego in 2001.[5] Owen speaks French fluently, and conversational Spanish and German.
