Things to see in and around Paris

Eiffel tower

An obvious one, Paris' emblematic landmark is a must for any Paris newbie. After you've been around it, go up to get an unforgettable view of Paris.

Notre Dame

You know, where the hunchback ran around saying "the bell, the bell". This cathedral is a visual delight for lovers of the Gothic style and is open to the public.

Sacré-coeur

Another religious monument, the Sacré-coeur is a favorite stop for tourists who then promptly turn their backs on the basilica and enjoy probably the best natural view of Paris from the top of the "butte Montmartre", where the Sacré-coeur is located.

Arc de Triomphe

Paris's "arc of triumph" is a celebration of France's Napoleonic heroes and the focal point of Paris' glitziest avenues, which all converge on the "Place de l'Etoile" where the arc is situated, including the Champs-Elysées. Go up to the arc's roof for another great view of Paris.

Tour Montparnasse

You won't have too far to go to enjoy this monument, the tallest building in Paris at 209 meters in height. It's just down the street from the venue hotel! Book a table at the Tour's rooftop restaurant for a romantic dinner with the Paris skyline as a backdrop.

Madeleine

The church of the Madeleine is just off Paris' high-class shopping streets, the "Rue Royal" and the "Rue St Honoré", and just a couple of minutes away from the two most famous department stores in Paris, Le Printemps and Les Galeries Lafayette.

Centre Georges Pompidou

Dubbed "Beaubourg" by the locals (it's off the "Rue Beaubourg"), this cultural center borrows its official name from one of France's former Presidents. Its convoluted architecture style rubs some people the wrong way even today, 30 years after it was opened. Go there for a public library and various art exhibitions.

The Louvre Museum

Although it's recently become famous as the starting point of religious mystery depicted in the Da Vinci Code novel, "Le Louvre" remains one of the world's most extensive repository of historically significant art and other items. Just seeing Mona's enigmatic smile for real makes a visit worthwhile…

Other stuff

Paris isn't known as one of the world's most stunning cities for nothing. Everywhere you go there are monuments, parks, famous landmarks and buildings to see and explore. There just so many of them it would take this whole wiki just to list them all. If you want to get a deeper idea of what Paris has to offer, use the city's portal. (also available in French and Spanish).

Places to visit around Paris

We're assuming here that you won't have more than one day off to indulge in a little sightseeing, which means you'll have your hands full just taking in all there is to see in Paris itself. But just in case you are able to get further afield, we'd strongly recommend going to the "Chateau de Versailles", the most famous chateau in France and one of the most stunning palaces in the world. (in French, English and Spanish).
