[edit] Upcoming New Top Level Domains

This website is intended to present and discuss potential new TLDs, to provide exposure, and to facilitate contacts with other TLD applicants to exchange information, collaborate, and demonstrate to ICANN that there's demand for new TLDs.

  • DotWeb The .Web Internet Domain Registry - The longest-standing prospective registry, first proposed in 1995, asked to prove the concept by IANA in 1996, applicant to ICANN in 2000, and continuing to await entry into the root.

The City TLD issue page looks at the features, benefits, and experience of existing city-like TLDs (.HK, .SG, .VA, .LA), and looks at the issues and applicants for new city-TLDs.

[edit] Open Root: a Democratic Open-Source Alternative to ICANN?

It has been suggested that an "independent, open-source" and very democratic nonprofit public root NGO be opened, organized, identified, and discussed, i.e. initially precisely in a forum such as this.

Suggested names for such an entity/effort include:

  • The Open Root (relevant domains are apparently already registered by third-parties)

(The former Public Root, and the current Unified Root -- see below -- are for profit entities that may or may not wish to be emulated, depending on the interests of ALL participants.)
