Application Details

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"The Applicant, PT Comunicações, S.A., a major company of the Portugal Telecom Group, is the largest provider of telecommunication services and Internet access provider in Portugal. SAPO is one of the key brands of the Applicant and the leading Portuguese Web Portal. In fact, SAPO is the biggest website and Internet project in Portugal with over 1.6 million unique daily visitors.

SAPOʹs business model is based on online advertising. The platform contains graphical, video and contextual text ads for all platforms, including PC, Mobile and Television. SAPO currently has about 40% of the online Portuguese advertising market.

SAPO also takes part in several R&D and talent initiatives. It currently runs two Labs at the University of Aveiro and University of Porto. SAPO also runs an annual event, Codebits, which is a 3 day, 24 hours a day conference with 900 attendees, featuring lectures, workshops and a 48 hour programming competition hosted annually by SAPO for the last 5 years - itʹs the biggest Internet related technology event in Portugal.

..

At least during the initial months or even years following the delegation of the .SAPO gTLD to Portugal Telecom, this extension is likely going to be a so-called “single registrant TLD” as contemplated by ICANN in Article 4.5 of the template Registry Operator Agreement (“Transition of Registry upon Termination of Agreement”). For the avoidance of doubt, a “single registrant TLD” is a TLD where “(i) all domain name registrations in the TLD are registered to, and maintained by, Registry Operator for its own exclusive use, and (ii) Registry Operator does not sell, distribute or transfer control or use of any registrations in the TLD to any third party that is not an Affiliate of Registry Operator.”

Therefore, parties who are not Portugal Telecom or – insofar and to the extent Portugal Telecom deems appropriate – an Affiliate will not be entitled to register domain names in the .SAPO gTLD."[3]
