.sbs is one of ShortDot SA's gTLDs.[1] It was first delegated in 2015 as part of ICANN's New gTLD Program.
History of Ownership
On November 7, 2014, Special Broadcasting Service Corporation registered the .sbs TLD with ICANN, for private use. The company's application to ICANN succeeded and the extension was delegated to the Root Zone 29 October 2015. [2][3]
On April 22, 2020, Special Broadcasting Service Corporation sent ICANN an intent to terminate the .sbs TLD. On June 12, 2020, ICANN made a preliminary determination that the .sbs TLD would not be handed over to a new operator. On July 12, 2020, ICANN finalized the decision and terminated the .sbs TLD.
On May 6, 2021, the domain registry ShortDot announced that it had acquired the .sbs TLD and was launching it as a gTLD, with registrations available immediately for trademark holders. In June 2021, the .sbs domain went into general availability.[4]
ShortDot Ownership
Since mid-2021, .sbs has been under ShortDot SA's ownership. The registry markets .sbs as being short for "side by side" and present it as an option for social welfare, progressive, and/or virtual-oriented organizations, corporates, businesses, entrepreneurs, and professionals interested in doing well for themselves and the community.[5]
Special Broadcasting Service Ownership
Under SBS's ownership, .sbs operated as a restricted registry for the corporation to promote its brand identity. It provided an authoritative internet space for SBS, its affiliates and partners associated with the brand. Second and third level domains were utilised for information, news and entertainment purposes. SBS is an Australian public broadcasting radio and television network first established in 1978 as an independent statutory authority under an amendment effected in 1978 of the Broadcasting and Television Act 1942 (Australia). Then it was established as a separate Australian Commonwealth authority incorporated for a public purpose in 1991 under the Special Broadcasting Service Act 1991 (Australia) (SBS Act).[6]
