.okinawa is a proposed new gTLD being applied for in ICANN's new gTLD program. Two entities, Business Railliart Inc. and GMO Registry, have both announced intentions to apply for the extension, and it remains unclear whether or not the two are working together or are preparing competitive bids. Both entities have also declared intentions to apply for .ryukyu as well.[1][2] Furthermore, both companies are included in a list of 4 Japanese companies that have received approval from the Government of Osaka to apply and run .osaka.[3]

Business Railliart has announced that investors in its bid for .okinawa and .ryukyu include a well-known Okinawan and Japanese rental car service and a restaurant chain.[4]

Okinawa is a southern Prefecture in Japan, and it is a major part of the Ryukyu chain of islands.[5]
