Filiz Yilmaz works in Network Development EMEA for Subspace. She was the Senior Director of Participation and Engagement at ICANN[1] from 2010 to 2013. Inspired by her own experience as a first-time ICANN meeting attendee at ICANN Seoul, Filiz established the Newcomers track and lounge in order to make the experience less overwhelming for future first-timers.
Filiz is a member of the ASO Address Council and participates in RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, AfriNIC, ARIN, ISOC Turkey, and other IT groups in Turkey.[2]
Career
Yilmaz also currently runs her own firm goodnets.net, a boutique consultancy focused on relationship management, partnership and business development, event and training organization, Internet infrastructure resource management, Internet policy, and telecom regulation. Before that, She engaged in business development for Asteroid International.[3] From 2014-2018, she held the positions of Director of Network Operations and Sr Manager Network Strategy EMEA at Akamai Technologies. Yilmaz previously worked with the company that brought the Internet to Turkey.[5]
She started her career working at Middle East Technical University in 1996 as the User Support and Informatics Group Assistant Manager and then as a Research Assistant.[6] Her thesis, "A Computational Analysis of Information Structure in Turkish," was recognized as the Institute's thesis of the year.[7]
Education
She holds a BSc. degree in Mathematics and an MSc in Mathematics and Cognitive Science from Orta Dogu Teknik Üniversitesi.[8] Her interest lies in the interplay between humans and technology, and making the internet more humane and relatable.[9]
