Dr. Stefania Milan is an advisor to the Italian government and one of its representatives within ICANN, its GAC, and other IT fora.[1] She is a postdoc currently residing in Canada, and working with The Citizen Lab and the Canada Center for Global Security Studies, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto.[2][3] She is also a researcher, journalist, and consultant, specializing in social movements, alternative media, participation issues and media policy, emancipatory communication practices, the interplay between technologies and society, and the politics of code.[4][5]

Research, Teaching, & Publication

Dr. Milan is also a Research Fellow at the Centre for Media and Communication Studies at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. She has taught at the CEU and at the University of Lucerne, in Switzerland, where she was awarded the Excellent Teaching ("Hervorragende Lehre") title in 2009. She has contributed to many academic journals, writing on citizens’ participation in multilevel governance, new media, social movements, and grassroots media. Stefania is also a freelance journalist and member of the UK National Union of Journalists.[6]

Education

Stefania Milan holds a Ph.D in Political Sciences and Social Sciences from the European University Institute. He dissertation is entitled, "Stealing the fire. A study of emancipatory practices in the field of communication."[7] During her undergraduate program, Stefania studied Communication Sciences at the University of Padova.
