Andy Müller-Maguhn is a German journalist who served on the ICANN Board from November 2000 to June 2003.

Andy was elected to the ICANN Board in November 2000. He represented the European region in the At-Large voting process conducted one month prior. Andy served until June 2003.[1] In 2002, after ICANN eliminated democratically elected representation, Andy said, "I used the chance to get some improvements, like getting flow of information as a core value of ICANN. So I still think I can be a constructive part of ICANN, improving it or at least making it less worse…. But there is a major shift making the governments a much stronger part of ICANN and reducing at-large input to a quite unspecified role."[2]

Career

Andy is a German journalist who has studied social and technological developments in the field of electronic networks. He has been a member of the Chaos Computer Club, a German hacker association, since the 1980s and has served on its board.[1][3] According to ICANN, "Through this work, he gets in touch with and looks after projects that claim a critical and creative handling of technology. The main part of this work lies within the future-compatible structures and lifeforms and in the attempt to support those developments through transparency."[1] Andy is also a founding member and former Board member of the EDRI-Organisation (European Digitals Rights).[3]

Since 2002, he has operated the thinktank "Datenreisebuero” (Data Travel Agency),[4] which houses the Berlin office Computer Chaos Club and provides spaces for conferences, projects, and workshops. He served on the advisory board of the Institute for Risk & Fraud Management at Steinbeiss University starting in 2004. The Internet Society's biography of Andy reads in part: "Having achieved a long term experience in the handling of electronic networks, questions of infrastructure policies and technologies, security aspects and in-depth-studies of the digital ocean Mueller-Maguhn consults and advises a variety of organizations, projects and entities from very different areas on policital, strategic, operational and tactical questions on the use of electronic communication tools and related questions. Key questions remain the freedom of information in the context of communication processes, the neutrality of the network as well as the privacy other user."[3]

In 2011, Andy launched buggedplanet.info as a wiki for tracking the surveillance industry. Since 2012, he has been a member of the board of the Wau Holland Foundation which supports "projects for freedom of information, informational self-determination and civil courage in various forms". He is part of the advisory board for the Courage Foundation.[4]
